01 / A SENSE OF PLACE

Usenge.
Nairobi.
Africa.

Raised in Usenge and Nairobi, PLO Lumumba’s early life connects western Kenya with the capital. Born on 17 July 1962, he went on to study law at the University of Nairobi and earn his doctorate at Ghent University.

Usenge sits beside Lake Victoria in Siaya County, in Kenya’s Luo heartland. It is a living place of fishing, trade and community; an essential part of the geography behind the public figure.

Celestine Otieno-Lumumba is Managing Partner at Lumumba & Lumumba Company Advocates, with extensive experience in commercial law and governance. She also serves as a director of the PLO Lumumba Foundation.

Their story began at the University of Nairobi. In his own account, PLO Lumumba recalls that they started dating while he was in third year and she was in second year.

They are parents to two daughters. Family belongs in this portrait as a part of his life, alongside the law, scholarship and public service.

03 / THE AFRICA HE HOPES TO SEE

“An Africa which
is borderless.”

PLO LUMUMBA / TAP MAGAZINE, 2021

In his published reflections, PLO Lumumba describes a continent where Africans can move freely, recover their self-esteem and build political stability and shared prosperity.

His hopes extend to the everyday: African languages heard with pride, African films finding audiences, and young people shaping the institutions they inherit.

In 2011, PLO Lumumba’s tenure at the Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission ended during the transition to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission. Contemporary reporting records that institutional change; it should be distinguished from interpretations of its political motives.

In September 2018, Zambia denied PLO Lumumba entry ahead of a planned lecture on Africa–China relations, citing security considerations. Public criticism of that decision followed.

His public positions have also drawn disagreement. The July 2023 Cape Town lecture prompted protests concerning his statements on LGBTQ rights. This context forms part of the public record alongside the lecture itself.

IGBO HERITAGE / SOUTHEASTERN NIGERIA

Isi Agu.
A heritage worn forward.

The repeating animal-head motif gives Isi Agu its unmistakable presence. In PLO Lumumba’s black-and-orange ensemble, the lion heads are visible across the cloth: a distinct Igbo tradition within a continental wardrobe.

Isi Agu belongs to the social life of ceremony: traditional marriages, title-taking and New Yam celebrations. Once especially associated with titled men, the cloth now finds expression in contemporary designs for women, men and younger generations.

The story carried by the cloth

Heritage is sustained through use, memory and reinvention. Anambra State’s Ministry of Information describes Isi Agu as an expression of Igbo identity, connecting dress with language, festivals and community. Its contemporary reach is part of that continuing history.

Animal-head translations vary across sources; the lion motif in this photograph is visible. Clothing alone does not establish a wearer’s ceremonial title.

THE CLOTH HAS A HISTORY

Fugu. Batakari.
The northern Ghanaian smock.

The broad, flaring striped silhouette seen in the Accra portrait belongs to the visual language of the northern Ghanaian smock. Narrow woven cotton strips are joined into a garment associated with belonging, dignity and leadership.

Ghana’s National Commission on Culture traces its life from northern communities and ceremonial settings to presidents, festivals and contemporary design. Its power is also economic: weaving, stitching and finishing sustain a community of makers.

This identifies the garment tradition, rather than certifying the maker, fibre or symbolic meaning of PLO Lumumba’s particular piece. The black-and-orange lion-head ensemble is discussed below as Isi Agu. For garments from PLO’s collection, contact Ssali. Our curated collection of African designers is selected for your occasion or country. The house guides your enquiry through a personal selection and quotation.
